Carbomer 940 (Polygel CA-type, INCI: Carbomer) is a high-molecular-weight cross-linked polyacrylic acid that turns water into crystal-clear, short-flow gels once it is neutralised. It is the workhorse thickener behind hand sanitiser gels, clear face and hair gels, serums, aloe gels and light gel-creams, and it also suspends beads and stabilises emulsions at very low levels. Formulating tip: Sprinkle carbomer slowly onto the vortex of room-temperature water (or let it sit on the surface to wet out) to avoid fish-eyes, hydrate fully, then neutralise drop-wise to pH 6–7 — the gel snaps thick only after neutralisation. Add electrolytes, salts and some actives (vitamin C, high AHA levels) with care because they thin carbomer gels.

Is Carbomer 940 water soluble?
It disperses and swells in water (not oil). Hydrate it in the water phase first, then neutralise.
